Waiting on Wednesday: Ingenue by Jillian Larkin

Waiting on Wednesday was started by Jill at Breaking the Spine and serves to showcase those books we’re not so patiently waiting to arrive!

Barnes & Noble used to have an online “first look” book club that really started me on the path of reading and reviewing books in more depth than I did prior to joining.  It also introduced me to Ken Scholes’ The Psalms of Isaac series that I devoured as fast as I could (see my review of the first book, Lamentation, here).  As part of this defunct program, I also received books I wouldn’t have otherwise picked up, such as Jillian Larkin’s Vixen.  Despite my soft spot for the roaring 20s, it sounded very “Gossip Girl in a speakeasy” to me.  Turned out I was partially right and though I had a problem with the ending, I still loved the book, which is why I’m very excited for the second book in the Flappers series.  That’s why this week’s Waiting on Wednesday pick is Ingenue by Jillian Larkin.

Bobbed hair. Short skirts. Cool jazz. Dark speakeasy. Anything goes. Meet the flappers, Gloria, Clara, Lorraine . . . and the rich young boys who love and loathe them.

Wow, that’s a sad little blurb to use to promote a book that will hopefully be as exciting and bubbly as the first in the series.  This  book is supposed to pick up once Gloria, the rich Chicago princess, has abandoned her arranged marriage to run off to New York City with Jerome, an African American piano player.  Gloria’s best friend, Lorraine,  is scheduled to head to college in New York City as well.  Then there’s the former-bad-girl-gone-good cousin Clara, who has a wild and crazy past in NYC.  I imagine she will once again find herself there.  I’m hoping for illegal speakeasies, mystery, and the inevitable fiery crash of Gloria’s current and past lives come together.
