Waiting on Wednesday: The Iron Wyrm Affair by Lilith Saintcrow

Waiting on Wednesday was started by Breaking the Spine and serves to showcase those books we’re not so patiently waiting to arrive!

I am officially unemployed. People keep giving me baked goods and the only thing I have to do tomorrow is return some books to the library. No wonder I keep finding myself with a silly smile on my face...

Emma Bannon, Prime sorceress in the service of the Empire, has a mission: to protect Archibald Clare, a failed, unregistered mentath. His skills of deduction are legendary, and her own sorcery is not inconsiderable. It doesn’t much help that they dislike each other, or that Bannon’s Shield, Mikal, might just be a traitor himself. Or that the conspiracy killing registered mentaths and sorcerers alike will just as likely kill them as seduce them into treachery toward their Queen. In an alternate London where illogical magic has turned the Industrial Revolution on its head, Bannon and Clare now face hostility, treason, cannon fire, black sorcery, and the problem of reliably finding hansom cabs.

The game is afoot…

If I can be completely honest, that description (from Goodreads) makes absolutely no sense to me. I'm not entirely sure what it's talking about, what some of the words mean or if this is steampunk or magical fantasy with a steampunk cover. But none of that matters. It's Victorian London with a love-hate pairing with a cover that looks like it's from a Sherlock Holmes movie.
