Welcome to my attempt at 5 Fandom Friday, where I try to contribute to a weekly meme but usually forget. This fun weekly postathon is hosted by The Nerdy Girlie and Super Space Chick. If you’re interested in joining up, check out future posting topics here.
This week’s 5 Fandom Friday is a subject near and dear to my heart: Fandom Phrases. I’m taking this to mean quotes from things of which I’m in the fandom that make regular appearances in my life. I could easily fill this 5 Fandom Friday with quotes from Supernatural that I use on a near daily basis, but I’ll try to expand a little.
“It goes ding when there’s stuff.” – Doctor Who
This is a line from one of David Tennant’s Doctor Who episodes. He had a doodad that went “ding” when there was stuff going wrong with the timeline or something. This is a common phrase in our household, said most often whenever we use the toaster oven. It sometimes gets cut down to simply a joyful exclamation of “STUFF!” when the toaster dings.
“Confetti! It’s a parade!” – Supernatural
So this is kind of a cheat because it’s actually from the Supernatural gag reel of season 5. Misha Collins says it after a bunch of papers float around his head during a practical effects sequence. Now every time I make a mess involving paper, I exclaim “Confetti! It’s a parade!” My former office mate once looked at me like I’d grown a second head after I said this phrase following an unfortunate event with a paper hole puncher.
“You just threw your pager into the Pacific.” – Alias
This phrase has no use in day-to-day life and I probably haven’t ever uttered it except when reciting lines from Alias, but that scene was the moment I fell into the Alias fandom. It also happened to be my first fandom, so it opened a door to a whole need world for me.
One that I do use fairly regularly: “That sound that you’re… you know, that ‘boom’? That’s my mind blowing.”
“Guys… I know kung-fu.” – Chuck
I also don’t use this one that much in real life, but it’s a pivotal Chuck moment that can be used in awkward moments to lighten the situation. Rarely do people know what I’m referring to, but that’s okay.
And finally – of course – “We’re not working for the mandroid!” - Supernatural
Does it need much explanation? You have to have the right slight Texas inflection though because Jared’s Texan really comes out on that one.
Runner’s Up: “We don’t have time for your blah blah blah blah.” Or “Bring me some pie!” Or “Saving people, hunting things, the family business!” Or "I don't understand that reference." Or “What kind of house doesn’t have salt?!” Or “What do you want to do, poke her with a stick? Dude! You’re not going to poke her with a stick!” Or a million others from Supernatural
I speak Supernatural pretty fluently.
